Ingredients

Here’s what you need to make this recipe:

Labeled ingredients for oreo spiders.
  • Oreo cookies – you can use regular or chocolate oreos. You can also use double stuf oreos which have more cream to keep the legs but both types will work.
  • Chocolate-covered biscuit sticks. You can use chocolate-covered biscuit sticks (such as Pocky) or pretzel sticks. You can also use bare regular pretzel sticks or coat pretzel sticks in melted chocolate. Instead of chocolate legs, you can use licorice cut into smaller pieces. I prefer chocolate and pretzels since me and my kids are not fans of licorice.
  • Candy eyes – look super cute. If you can’t find them you can pipe the ‘eyes’ with melted white and bittersweet chocolate. You could also use m&m’s or smarties chocolate candy.
  • Baking milk chocolate or chocolate chips to spread on the oreos – act as a ‘glue’ for the eyes and ‘fur’ (chocolate sprinkles). You can also use chocolate frosting if you have some on hand.
  • Chocolate sprinkles – should resemble spiders’ ‘fur’.

How to make oreo spiders step by step

A collage of three photos showing how to make oreo spiders step by step.

STEP 1: Melt the chocolate: chop the chocolate into small pieces and place in a heat-proof bowl. Place the bowl on a small pot filled with boiling water. Let stand for a minute then stir until the chocolate is melted.

STEP 2: Cut biscuit sticks into smaller pieces (about 2 inches or 5cm).

STEP 3: Separate the oreos and press 6 sticks into the cream layer. Close the oreos.

STEP 4: Spread melted chocolate on top of oreos.

STEP 5: Place two candy eyes on each cookie. Sprinkle with chocolate sprinkles. Set aside until the chocolate is set.

Enjoy!

Storage

These delicious treats can be easily made ahead. You can store them in a tightly closed container for a couple of days at room temperature. The cookies will lose their crunch over time so if you want to keep them crunchy, don’t keep them longer than a day.

I think nowadays you would have to use double stuffed Oreos or maybe even triple stuffed. Regular Oreos have less than an eighth of an inch of frosting so they do not hold together with the pretzels inside.

I’ve made these last year with regular Oreo cookies and they held just fine. I have step by step photos in the body of the post where you can see how much of the frosting is inside, but sure, it won’t hurt to use double-stuffed Oreos!
