These mummy hot dogs are delicious and easy savory Halloween snack. Just wrap pizza dough around some hot dogs and bake! (you can also use crescent dough). Kids will love this fun twist on the classic pigs in a blanket. Serve them with spider’s web ketchup-mustard dip.

Ingredients

To make these mummy hot dogs you will need:

  • hot dogs
  • pizza dough – I used store-bought
    • you can also use crescent dough (you can buy the kind that has perforations in it or the kind that is one solid rectangle of dough)
    • or even puff pastry – should be thawed and cold
  • cheese – optional but what doesn’t taste better with cheese? wrapping the dough around the hot dogs is a little bit harder with cheese on them but I still prefer to use it
  • candy eyes – to make mummy ‘eyes’, if you can’t get them you can just make small dots of mustard instead

Step by step instructions

Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C).

A rolled out dough is being cut into strips. A pastry dough is being wrapped around a hot dog.

STEP 1: Cut the pizza dough into thin strips (if using homemade pizza dough, roll it out into a rectangle, about 1/4-inch or 5mm thick, then cut into strips). You can use a sharp knife or a pizza cutter.

The pizza dough should be thicker than on the photos – puff pastry is shown here and it needs to be rolled out thinner than pizza dough.

If using crescent roll dough: roll it into 2 rectangles, seal seams and perforations. Cut each rectangle into thin strips. Wrap the dough around hot dogs.

STEP 2: Place one piece of cheese underneath one hot dog. Wrap the dough around the hot dog and cheese creating ‘bandages’, make sure to leave the gap for the ‘eyes’.

If using store-bought pizza dough or crescent dough, make sure to stretch the dough slightly while wrapping it around the hot dog to make it slightly thinner.

STEP 3: Place your mummies on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper (cheese-side down).

Bake for about 15 minutes, until the dough is lightly golden.

(If using crescent dough, bake them for 10-12 minutes, if using puff pastry, for about 20 minutes).

“Glue” the candy eyes to the mummies using a bit of mustard or ketchup.

If you don’t have candy eyes, you can just place small dots of mustard instead (with a toothpick).

STEP 4 (optional): Make spider’s web ketchup-mustard dip. Pour some ketchup into a small bowl, draw a few circles on top with the mustard, use a toothpick to draw the lines from the center to the edge to create a spider’s web design.

Enjoy!

Serving suggestions

  • make spider’s web ketchup-mustard dip (described above)
  • serve it with honey mustard dip
  • marinara dipping sauce

Storage

You can store these ‘mummies’ for up to 2 days in the fridge. Candy eyes don’t store well!

You can reheat this treat in the oven, about 5 minutes at 375°F (190°C).

You can make this ahead by wrapping the hot dogs with the dough – keep them in the fridge until ready to bake.
