Mummy apple hand pies are a delicious puff pastry apple dessert that requires just 4 ingredients. These quick and easy Halloween treats are loved by kids and adults. These mummy pastries take literally 10 minutes to make and 30 minutes to bake!

Ingredients:

This recipe requires just 3 ingredients:

  • puff pastry – for the best flavor, use all-butter puff pastry
  • sugar – you can use granulated sugar or light brown sugar, for a healthy option you can use xylitol
  • cinnamon
  • apples – sweet and tender apples would be best – I used Gala apples

Additionally, so that these pastries look like mummies you need some kind of candy, that resembles eyes. You can buy ready-made candy eyes or make them from white chocolate and black mustard seeds (or poppy seeds) – this is what I did.

Ingredients for mummy apple hand pies.

Easy Halloween treats step by step:

Sliced apples on a chopping board. Cinnamon sugar in a bowl. Squares of puff pastry with cinnamon sugar and apples on top.

STEP 1: Peel and core the apples, then slice them. Make cinnamon sugar: mix the sugar with cinnamon.

STEP 2: Sprinkle the puff pastry with flour on both sides (so it won’t stick) then place on a piece of parchment paper. Cut the puff pastry sheet into 6 rectangles. Sprinkle half of the cinnamon sugar in the middle of the squares then place the apple slices on top.

STEP 3: Cut the dough into strips on both sides of the apples.

STEP 4: Wrap the dough strips around the apples. Try to do that not so neatly as these pastries should look like mummies!

STEP 5: Sprinkle the pastries with the rest of the cinnamon sugar (you could brush the pastries with the egg wash first if you wish, but it’s not necessary).

STEP 6: Bake the pastries at 375°F / 190°C for 30 minutes.

STEP 7: Now place the candy eyes on top. You can ‘glue’ them with some melted white chocolate or sugar glaze (made with icing sugar and water).

How to make candy eyes with white chocolate: melt a couple of squares of white chocolate using a double-broiler method (pour boiling water into a small pot, then place a bowl over the top, add the chocolate to the bowl and stir until melted). Using a teaspoon, apple small rounds of melted chocolate onto a small piece of parchment paper, that should look like eyes. Apply either black mustard seeds or poppy seeds in the middle. Put in the fridge for the chocolate to set. Make sure that your pastries are completely cold before putting the chocolate eyes on top, otherwise the chocolate will melt.

Enjoy!

Storage:

These apple hand pies taste best for up to 2-3 hours after baking them (are super crispy), then they will start to turn soft. In terms of flavors, they will keep for up to 2-3 days. Store them in a tightly closed container.
