Pizza Toast

Pizza toast is a delicious open-faced sandwich topped with all the things you would put on pizza. This is more of an idea than a recipe but we really like this 15-minute recipe, especially when we crave pizza and want something quick and easy.

My favorite pizza toast is topped with pizza sauce, ham, smoked and regular mozzarella, mushrooms, bell pepper, corn, and pesto. Give it a try!

Ingredients

Pizza toast is a viral TikTok recipe and most recipes call for a simple topping of cheese and pepperoni. It’s also delicious but if you’d like to give my version a try, here’s what you need:

  • bread – any type
  • pizza sauce (or marinara sauce)
  • butter
  • cheese – I went with smoked and regular mozzarella but use what you have on hand
  • toppings – I love mushrooms, bell pepper, and canned corn on my pizza toast, ingredients that are very watery (like mushrooms) need to be cooked first
  • pesto – I love to dollop pesto on pizza!

The original pizza toast recipe comes from a model Hailey Bieber and features sourdough bread, truffle oil, tomatoes, burrata, pizza sauce, and parmesan. I haven’t tried this version yet but it sounds really good!

How to make it step by step

STEP 1: Preheat the oven to 425°F (220°C). Spread the bread with a thin layer of butter and place on a baking tray. When the oven is hot, place the bread in the oven and bake for about 5-6 minutes or until golden (keep an eye on it to not burn it).

It’s important to toast the bread first, before adding the toppings, otherwise the bread will end up soggy.

STEP 2: Take the bread out of the oven and turn it over.

STEP 3: Spread 2 tablespoons of pizza sauce on each slice of toast. Top with sliced ham.

STEP 4: Place smoked gouda slices on top, then sprinkle shredded mozzarella.

STEP 5: Place all your favorite toppings on top – in my case – sauteed sliced mushrooms, finely diced bell pepper, and canned corn.

Bake for 6-7 minutes or until the cheese is melted.

STEP 6: Drizzle a small amount of pesto on each toast.

NOTES:

  • you could also do this under the broiler/grill but you need to really pay attention to not burn the toasts
  • these are also great to make in an air fryer (at 425°F/220°C)
  • you can also use a toaster oven, especially if you’re making a small batch just for yourself!

Ingredients

  • 4 slices toast bread

  • 2 slices ham
  • 4 slices smoked mozzarella
  • 1/2 cup shredded regular low-moisture mozzarella
  • 3 small button mushrooms sliced and sauteed in a pan
  • 1/8 red bell pepper
  • 1/4 cup canned corn
  • basil pesto to serve

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 425°F (220°C). Spread the bread with a thin layer of butter and place on a baking tray. When the oven is hot, place the bread in the oven and bake for about 5-6 minutes or until golden (keep an eye on it to not burn it).
  • Take the toasted bread out of the oven. Tu rn it over and spread 2 tablespoons of pizza sauce on each slice of toast.
  • Top with sliced ham.
  • Place smoked gouda slices on top, then sprinkle shredded mozzarella. Place all your favorite toppings on top – in my case – sauteed sliced mushrooms, finely diced bell pepper, and canned corn.
  • Bake for 6-7 minutes or until the cheese is melted.
  • Drizzle a small amount of pesto on each toast.
  • Enjoy!

Notes

  • For a simpler pizza toast, you can just use pizza sauce, mozzarella, and pepperoni.
  • You could also toast the bread under the broiler/grill but you need to keep an eye on it in order not to burn it. Air fryer and toaster oven also work great, especially for a small batch.
  • Calories = 1 pizza toast (1/4 of the recipe). This is only an estimate!
